The island is much wider than Bali, with two main gateways: Sumbawa Besar in the west and Bima in the east.
How to Get to Sumbawa
There’s no single “right” way to arrive but it depends on your budget, your timing, and how much of an adventure you’re after. Below we’ve laid out four routes, from the fastest flight to a helicopter splurge, so you can choose your own path to the island.
Ways 1 – Direct Flight to Sumbawa Besar
If speed and simplicity are your priorities, flying straight to Sumbawa Besar is the most time-efficient way to reach the west coast.
Via Air to Sumbawa Besar
Domestic airlines connect Bali (Denpasar, DPS) and Lombok (LOP) to Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III Airport (SWQ) in Sumbawa Besar. There’s typically a daily direct service from Bali. Flights are short and sweet, and they let you skip the ferry crossing entirely.
Travel to Resort
Sumbawa Besar airport sits right in town, and from there it’s a scenic drive along the coast to our part of West Sumbawa. Rather than wrangling a taxi or bus on arrival, the easiest thing is to let us arrange a private transfer so a friendly driver is waiting when you land.
Option Number 2 – From Lombok
Many travellers prefer routing through Lombok, which often has more flight options and connects to Sumbawa via a short sea crossing.

Lombok International Airport (LOP) is well served by domestic flights from Bali and other Indonesian hubs, with plenty of daily departures to choose from.
By The Sea to Sumbawa
There are a few ways to make the hop, depending on your budget and how quickly you want to arrive.
Ferry
The classic option is the public car ferry from Kayangan (Labuan Lombok) to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa. These run roughly every hour, around the clock, and the crossing takes about one and a half to two hours. They’re affordable and take foot passengers, scooters, and cars. From Poto Tano, it’s a short onward drive to us.
Speed Boat
If you’d rather cut the crossing time, a faster boat service can get you over more quickly and, depending on the option, closer to the west-coast surf areas. Schedules vary and advance booking is wise, so it’s best to confirm current times with us before you travel.
Private Boat
For the smoothest, most flexible arrival, a private fast boat can take you directly across on your own schedule and, in some cases, drop you close to the beach.
Option Number 3 – Land Route from Bali
Feeling adventurous? Here’s how it flows, step by step.
Go to Padang Bai
Start on Bali’s east coast at Padang Bai, the harbour town where ferries depart for Lombok. It’s an easy drive from most parts of southern Bali, and a good idea to set off early so the rest of the day runs smoothly.
Ship to Lembar, Lombok
From Padang Bai, board the public ferry across to Lembar Harbour in west Lombok. It’s the longest single leg of the trip (around four to five hours across the strait) so settle in, grab a snack, and enjoy the sea views.
Drive to Kayangan Port
Once you land at Lembar, you’ll travel overland across Lombok to Kayangan (Labuan Lombok) on the east coast. A pre-booked driver makes this leg painless, especially if you’re carrying luggage or boards.
Ship to Poto Tano
From Kayangan, hop on the hourly car ferry across to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa. Aim for a daytime crossing so your onward transfer on the Sumbawa side is easy to arrange.
